He has committed acts 10,000 times as bad – the present calculation of casualties resulting from his reductions to international aid amounts to 600,000 and growing, and presently an analysis predicted his fossil fuel policies would cause deaths another 1.3 million. That is those of us – in older age cohorts almost a majority – who were brought up as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have witnessed across decades as politically conservative religious groups converted the Savior we learned about into the total contrary of our understanding of him. At its most basic, they converted a persona of compassion into a figure of hate who approves precisely the cruelties that he condemned in biblical teachings; this transformation occurred more gradually, across decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless disturbing through similar means, a bewildering emotional blow for countless people.
A Toxic Christianity Gains Ground
Hence I shall explain the Christ from my upbringing, as conceptually the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and because the rapidly expanding group among Americans may possess limited understanding of him since they are non-believers or uncertain individuals or religiously unaffiliated. The obvious and straightforward fact that the Savior from scripture calls for a kind of extreme compassion centered on the poor has perpetually caused Christian religion something of a provocative belief system: appealing to the general public, but owing to its inherent radicalness demanding to be contained.
